WA: Rain over Perth but not enough to ease water crisis
Perth has copped a bucketing of rain today, but the first decent fall for more thaneight months will have little effect on a water crisis in the West Australian capital.
The city's dams are only 17.6 per cent full, and watering restrictions mean residentscan only use sprinklers for two days a week.
The weather bureau says 52mm of rain fell in the 12 hours to 9am (WST) today, makingit the wettest day since July 30 last year.
A Water Corporation spokesman says dams are so dry that it has to rain for severaldays just to soften the catchments to allow water to flow in.
Today's rain, which fell around WA's south-west corner, caused localised flooding inareas including the CBD and there were several minor car accidents.
Further south, a thunderstorm delayed for an hour the Margaret River Masters surfingevent, on fears competitors could be hit by lightning.
