Qld: Civil libs slam dna plan

The Civil Liberties Council has described a plan to allow Queensland police to take
mouth swabs from criminals or suspects as draconian.

The results from the samples taken would be registered on a DNA database.

The Council's state vice-president TERRY O'GORMAN says the new power is contrary to
the federal government's national DNA model where only a doctor is allowed to DNA test.

The Queensland Government endorsed the proposal at a meeting yesterday and it's expected
to be in place by 2001.
