Fed: London trip an escape from Alcatraz for Lees, says Beazley

Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY says he's not surprised that Australian Democrats leader
MEG LEES will join Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD's federation trip to London next year.

Mr BEAZLEY says he's not surprised that Senator LEES -- as part owner of the GST --
wants to be out of the country in July.

He says the pair have abandoned the citadel while the rest of Australia's left paying the GST.

Mr HOWARD has invited Mr BEAZLEY, state premiers, former prime ministers and Senator
LEES visit London in July for the 100th aniversary of Britain passing laws to give Australia
independence.

The trip will coincide with the start of the GST, which comes into force on July 1, 2000.

Mr BEAZLEY says he won't accept the invitation because too many people are going, and
he would have nothing to add.
